Recently The Landmarks Association of St. Louis held a seminar on Edward Durell Stone conducted by his son. I am so glad that I went since it raised my awareness of this important American architect. The other day I noticed that one of our Sotheby's affiliates had a home designed by him for sale. Stone was the architect of our old beloved Busch Stadium. Long Mansion- Corinthian Hall, Kansas City

This weekend I went to a wedding in Kansas City.  I had an opportunity to explore a little before driving back to St. Louis.  I traveled to visit the Long Mansion- Corinthian Hall located above the river somewhere North of town. This mansion was built by R.A. Long, who was a lumber barron, in the early 1900's.  It was designed by Henry Hoit of Van Brunt and Howe architects. It was a little reminiscent of the Rockcliffe Mansion in Hannibal that I sold earlier this year.  That also was built by a lumber barron around the same time. Unfortunately the house is closed and undergoing a renovation that I think will take several years. The house had lovely views of downtown KC and the river.

Over the weekend I had the treat of being invited by some friends to stay over at their ranch in Mendicino County near Hopland.  This is a enchanting place designed in the Tuscan style with a stunning main house and four private casitas. The scenery is mesmerizing and you can spend the whole day sitting near the pool looking at the view. The entire ranch can be rented out for a special getaway with your family and/or friends. Why Everyone is Talking About Austin, TX

I recently worked with a couple who used to live in Austin, Texas and was looking for a contemporary home in St. Louis.  We have a stunning one under contract, though it was hard finding one in St. Louis.  This one was not even for sale. Netherland Hotel, Cincinnati

Last week we made a stop and stayed in Cincinnati for the evening.  The highlight of the evening was enjoying some Graeter's ice cream at their new location on Fountain Park.

The other highlight was seeing the Netherland Hotel (Hilton) again.  The Netherland is one of the greatest American Art Deco buildings. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mont Clair, Vincennes, IN

A highlight of my recent trip was visiting one of my ancestor's farm, Mont Clair. Mont Clair was built by Nathaniel Ewing around 1806 and was fancied-up in 1911 when the neo-classical columns were added.  The 500 acre farm has been in the Ewing family for seven generations and was recently put in a land trust to preserve it in its present state.

The top hat owned by former St. Louis mayor, William L. Ewing, Sr.  He left St. Louis after losing his reelection and returned to the family home at Vincennes, IN.  Many of his possessions are still at the house.

Fallingwater

I am back home after a grueling drive last night.  Somehow my sons convinced me to continue driving all the way back to St. Louis when we planned on spending the night in Columbus. 

Oh well at least we are home and don't have to drive today.

Fallingwater was an experience and I want it!  Seeing this Frank Lloyd Wright home inspires you to further appreciate the architect and his focus on integrating a house with its surroundings.I wish I could show you some interior pics, though the museum does not let you take them.  You can see how our local William Bernoudy used many of the same ideas as Wright in his homes.  The use of built-in bookshelves, seating, lighting, etc.  He also was great at bringing the outside in  with his use of windows, terraces and balconies.

 

 

 

Fallingwater

Today I was at Fallingwater in PA, the famous house Frank Lloyd Wright built for the Kaufman family You could see the influence Wright had on St Louis' Bernoudy. More of the interior finishes....though I couldn't take pictures.

Hotel Costa Verde is proud to present its newest lodgings:

The fully outfitted, meticulously detailed, two bedroom, Boeing 727 fuselage suite. We have refurbished a vintage 1965 Boeing 727 airframe, which in its prior life shuttled globetrotters on South Africa Air and Avianca Airlines ( Colombia ).

Our phoenix is now ready for its future duty as the most exclusive hotel suite in Costa Rica .

 

727 Home Entrance

We salvaged this airframe, piece by piece, from its San Jose airport resting place. We carefully transported the pieces on five, big-rig trucks to the jungles of Manuel Antonio where they have been resurrected into a unique jumbo hotel suite. Our classic airplane, nestled on the edge of the National Park in our Costa Verde II area, is perched on a 50-foot pedestal. At this height, you will enjoy scenic ocean and jungle views from the hard wood deck built atop the plane's former right wing.

The plane's interior is Costa Rican teak paneling from the cockpit to the tail. Furnishings are hand-carved, teak furniture from Java , Indonesia . Our 727 home features two air conditioned bedrooms--one with two queen sized beds and the other with one queen sized bed, each with its own private bath—a flat screen TV, a kitchenette, dining area foyer; an ocean view terrace; a private entrance up a river rock, spiral staircase; and 360 degrees of surrounding gardens.

Enjoy an evening on the terrace while sipping a glass of wine and observing your tree top neighbors: sloths, toucans and monkeys...............

Our refurbished Boeing 727 home is not the only such dwelling in the world: We were inspired by a Forbes Magazine article about a company offering hurricane-proof living via surplus Boeing 727 airframes! Of course, we were intrigued and found some new ways to introduce convenience and luxury to this very prosaic bit of aluminum scrap. We are sure that you will agree with us!
