Art Deco in the Clayton Moorlands

The other day I was in the Moorlands area of Clayton and had a chance to snap some pictures of a wonderful Art Deco apartment/condo building on Byron.

12 Brentmoor Park, Clayton

Recently this fine home was sold to a family who intends to carefully renovate or build-out the inside of this important house. The interior was ripped out by a previous owner and left as a shell. The house was designed by Robert Fischer with an addition by Frederick Dunn. The lot also included the carriage house from 11 Brentmoor Park that belonged to Morton May's father. The carriage house was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw. Sale price: $797,811.

9 N. Brentmoor Park, Clayton, MO 63105 For Sale Again?

The saga of 9 N. Brentmoor Park continues. This house was sold in 2008 for $2,500,000 and then slapped back on the market immediately....finally selling this month for $2,050,000.  Well, a sign is in the yard again.  It is not in the MLS yet. This is one of St. Louis' grandest homes, though it is basically a shell that needs millions of finishing on the inside.

5 Brentmoor Park, Clayton, MO

The other day I was contacted by someone who was selling an old plate on E-bay from The Brickbuilder magazine.  It was printed in 1913.  The house was built  in 1911 by Howard Van Doren Shaw for my great grandfather, Ira Edward Wight.  My real name is Ira Edward Wight also....I get "Ted" from the Edward, though most people can not figure that out.  I even named my son Ira Edward to keep the name alive.  Ira was "in" about 1900 and has been losing popularity ever since.  We think that my great grandfather knew Howard from Yale.  Howard graduated in 1890 and my great grandfather in 1893.  Click HERE to see a current of view of the house from one of my previous posts. New Finds

"Historic Clayton Home Bursts with Art & Color"

The Post Dispatch profiled the lovely and gracious Old Town Clayton home of Karen Kalish.  I think that this home was one of the original state-themed houses that were used in the World's Fair. On Litzsinger Rd near my mother's house is the Rhode Island house. Yesterday I went through the most amazing house in stylish Claverach Park, Clayton.  The house has hardly been touched and updated....which may sound horrible to some....though it is nice that this house is in its original state and did not undergo a bad 80's renovation.  This could be your own little Sunset Boulevard mini-mansion. $700,000

Brentmoor Park, Clayton

Brentmoor Park is one of the most sought-after private neighborhoods. Traditionally the In neighborhoods were the private streets of the CWE, though everything keeps pushing West in St. Louis over the years.  Brentmoor Park appealed to the owner who wanted more land and privacy compared to Westmoreland and Portland Places. In those days the residents of the CWE would spend the entire afternoon going from neighbor to neighbor dropping off their calling cards.  It sounds like a perpetual Halloween.

My great grandfather moved his family up from New Orleans to St. Louis around 1908 and built a house at #5 Brentmoor Park in 1911 designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw.  His wife was from St. Louis and did not think New Orleans was a place to raise a family....I think there were also malaria scares.

It is interesting that he moved his family to Westmoreland Place in the 20's. They must have not liked "the suburbs".

More Clayton Gardens- new construction

Yesterday I featured some of the new construction in Clayton Gardens that I liked and some that were not ideal.  Here are some more!

Clayton Gardens- new construction

Clayton Gardens neighborhood is located north of Maryland Avenue from Gay Avenue up to Brentwood and then south of Delmar.  Over the years people have been tearing down the sturdy ranch homes to build some elegant infill that generally starts around $1.5 million. Sometimes these homes are architecturally appealing and sometimes they just miss the mark.  The first three homes I have pictured are some of the best examples of quality design....the bottom three speak for themselves.
