This is amazing finding a photo of Al Baker's Restaurant! I have very fine memories of St. Louis and this place from back in the late 70's. By the way, I googled Al Baker's St. Louis and even found some matchbooks on ebay -- didn't buy them, just kind of neat to see. Thanks for posting this.

Al Baker's what an unbelievable place. Decor, food, and the wine list would rival any restaurant in the United States. Where could you go and do a vertical Chateau Latour.....starting with 1945, 1961,1970 and 1982. I remember the 1982 Latour selling for $250.00 back in 1990 when I started working there as a waiter right out of college....what an apprenticeship in the restaurant learning from the great Al Baker. The man was a perfectionist..demanding only the best. The man was tough, but very fair. Not every one could work for Al Baker, but those who could gained knowledge of a lifetime. I still think about the lessons I learned from that man

I was a Busboy at Al Bakers in the early 80's while in High School, I really respect him now, especially as I've owned my own restaurant in Arizona for the past 16+ years... I took a lot from him even though we never spoke, he was tough, good to his key staff, attentive to customers, a real class act, thank you Al Baker for showing me the way.
