Last night I attended the Martinis and Mid-century party at Circa on McPherson in the CWE.  What a fun event and a cool gallery.  Make sure you pop in next time you are in the CWE.

 

 

Outdoor Kitchens- Old and New

I was looking at a house in U City earlier this week and snooped in the neighbors back yard to see their old BBQ center.  There was a rage in 40's and 50's of building these elaborate "outdoor kitchens".....see the bottom pic...everything old is new again!

On Sunday I was showing houses in University City and drove by 748 Trinity Ave.  This Prairie-styled home was built in 1921 for Robert W. Bruner by Russell Barr Williamson.  Williamson was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and operated out of Milwaukee.

 

 

Fall Colors

I think that some of the Fall colors are the best in years.  All of the rain over the weeks has its benefits. This tree was the prettiest one I saw on Sunday.

Last weekend I was in Chesterfield and popped by to see the new sculpture, " The Awakening".  It is interesting.

French Prints

I grew up with these French Sparing prints in our family den growing up.  At some point I nabbed them from my parents and got them re-framed. They must have been popular since I see variations of them in antique stores periodically.  I love their expressions.

 

 

 

 

Fall Garden Pics

The blossoms may be gone from the garden, though it is still bursting with color.  Have you noticed that all of the rain this summer has caused a bumper crop of berries.  I am excited to see my Winterberries after they drop their leaves and just have twigs covered with bright red berries!

 

 

 

Straub's on Clarkson Closing

After only being open a few months, the new Straub's on Clarkson is closing at the end of the month.

Jon Cournoyer Opening- Friday night

I popped by the Jon Cournoyer Opening Friday night at Hoffman LaChance Gallery in Maplewood.  Jon is a very talented artist.  If you are in the Maplewood area, make sure you see the exhibit.

Below is a close up of one of his pieces. He incorporates artifacts that he has collected and then screen images over the layers.

John Cournoyer Exhibit Opens Tonight- Hoffman LaChance Gallery

John Cournoyer's exhibit "Empire of Dust"opens tonight at Hoffman LaChance Gallery in Maplewood. I have one of his pieces and love his work.

University City Rain Barrel Project

In an effort to alleviate some of the flooding in the River Des Peres, University City has a grant to give residents one rain barrel....while supplies and $ last.  I had mine installed today.  It even has a spigot that I can use to water my plants!

Vandeventer Place

Vandeventer Place was one of the finest private developments located in St.Louis.  The neighborhood started in 1870 and included a Henry Hobson Richardson house at #27. As the city grew and the new "in" streets of the CWE were being developed. The fashionable crowd moved west. Eventually in 1948 the neighborhood was torn down to make way for Veteran's Hospital on Grand.

One of the original gates was reconstructed behind the Jewel Box in Forest Park.  Designed by Louis C. Mullgardt in 1894.

 

Jewel Box Gardens- Forest Park

Yesterday I took a long walk in Forest Park. It has become sort of a Columbus Day tradition....though normally it is a run....my heal has been sore. The gardens in front of the Jewel Box were so bright and beautiful! I also got a bonus. Someone had torn up and thrown a bunch of thyme under a tree. I walked the rest of the way with three fragrant bunches in my hands.

 

 

 

 

 
 
 

U City Bathroom

You just have to love some of the old bathrooms in University City homes.  This one I stumbled into over the weekend and was in awe.  It is so easy for a homeowner to just rip it out and put in something safe or even glaze all of the tile white.  It takes some nerves to work with the existing tile and have a fun, exotic, quirky space that people look at and say ....cool!

Last week I finally stopped by the new bakery/coffee-shop/boutique/restaurant....Rue Lafayette.  Located on the south-side of Lafayette Park, this is place is a must visit.  I had a delicious personal quiche and one of their famous croissants.  Araceli, the owner, is so much fun and I loved her chef/baker.

Jennifer's Pharmacy, Clayton

I know that it is not a secret, though discovering the lunch counter at Jennifer's Pharmacy feels like one only known to a savvy few Claytonites.  Located on North Central, Jennifer's Pharmacy has fun gifts, toys, candles, soaps and even a pharmacy counter.....though I do not know if they actually can fill prescriptions. My son Teddy and I were having a late lunch and were lucky enough to find a couple of stools open at the counter. He had the most delicious strawberry malt and a chicken salad sandwich.  I had a yummy grilled meatloaf sandwich. After lunch I really wanted the last remaining slice of blackberry pie, though was too full.

Lunch @ Clarksville Station Restaurant, Pike County

Earlier this week I took my cousin to lunch at the Clarksville Station Restaurant after visiting the lovely Ashburton Farm that I blogged about a couple days ago.  After lunch we took 79 from Clarksville and drove up along the river to Hannibal to see the Rockcliffe Mansion. What a lovely drive and especially this time of the year.

Lake Forest Neighborhood, Richmond Heights

I was in a couple houses in Lake Forest the other day....and it was not the one featured yesterday covered in ivy. When I think of Lake Forest homes I know that there is a good chance that the house will have great terrazzo floors and fun basement recreation rooms.  The houses I was in yesterday were no exception. (The bottom pic is actually the ceiling of the second floor landing.)
