I stumbled across these cool outdoor chairs that would be great in downtown anywhere from St. Louis...Maplewood ....to Clayton.  They also could be an attractive alternative to the concrete barricades that block off so many streets in St. Louis.

Sugo's

Today I had lunch with one of my son's at Sugo's in Frontenac off of Clayton Road. We had the best Sicilian pizza. The pastas looked yummy also.(this post was created as a test using the iPhone Typepad app....I need to work on the quality of the pics)

7 Little Lane, Ladue

Last weekend I had the treat of going through 7 Little Lane.  This dynamic house was built by Eugene Mackey, Sr. for his own family in 1948. This home is perfectly placed on an acre of land that provides privacy and wonderful views from the large expanses of glass windows.  My pictures do not do it justice.

More Clayton Gardens- new construction

Yesterday I featured some of the new construction in Clayton Gardens that I liked and some that were not ideal.  Here are some more!

Clayton Gardens- new construction

Clayton Gardens neighborhood is located north of Maryland Avenue from Gay Avenue up to Brentwood and then south of Delmar.  Over the years people have been tearing down the sturdy ranch homes to build some elegant infill that generally starts around $1.5 million. Sometimes these homes are architecturally appealing and sometimes they just miss the mark.  The first three homes I have pictured are some of the best examples of quality design....the bottom three speak for themselves.

Rocio Romero House for Sale

What I am told is St. Louis' only Rocio Romero house is now for sale. Joel Svoboda of Remax has the house listed for $325,000 and it will be open March 1st from 1-3 PM.  The house is located at 4827 Theiss Road which is near 55 and 270. Get more information here.

San Luis Rally

I attended the rally to save the San Luis in the CWE from being torn down and converted into a parking lot. Tons of people showed up and were greeted by praises and honks as people drove by. Find out more about the effort to save the San Luis here.

Spring Awakening

I saw Spring Awakening at the Fox last night and loved it.  The storyline is dark and for those of you who have a tendency to blush...it has some risque scenes. The musics/songs are wonderful being performed by a cast with such strong voices.  At the Fox through February 22nd.

I have always loved the designs of Philippe Starck.  Here is the Miss K lamp available in St. Louis at Centro. How about the red one for your valentine!

San Luis Lovefest

This Saturday before you start your plans with your loved-one, come to the CWE and show your support for an endangered Mid-century building.  Remember...once building like these are gone... it is forever. With the proper vision and design, this building could be the coolest boutique hotel in St. Louis.

Here are some pics of The Standard Hotel on the Sunset Strip in LA. Once a shabby mid-century eyesore....now it is one of the hippest hotels in the area. All the San Luis needs is someone with the right vision for the mid-century building.

Pruning Trees

There is a horrible practice in St. Louis that is still going on....butcher pruning jobs on mature trees. I see it more often in South County and City where people love neatly clipped yews, zoysia and hey...why not mature trees.  This particular set of trees was in a neighborhood in Olivette.

I owned a house that had two sweet gum trees pruned like this in the backyard. In the Fall I would cringe to see the tree without leaves that shielded me from seeing the stumped branches.  What people do not realize is that the growth that comes from these stumps is weak and easily comes off in a storm. The wounds are also more susceptible to disease. It really does mess up a tree and once this has been done there is not much more that you can do other than cut it down.

I love Old Town Clayton and the cottage-like homes.  As you know many of them have been torn down to build $2 million+ new homes.  Here is a lovely example of one that is quietly on the market by the owner. Buy it and pretend that you are on vacation everyday on Lake Michigan.  $605,000

Red Twig Dogwoods

Every three years you should prune your red-twig dogwoods to the ground before Spring.  Your bush will send our vigorous new growth and your will see that next winter this growth will be a brighter red.  A side benefit is that you can bring some of the branches in your house as decoration!

Garage Sale Find

Yesterday I was dropping my son off at guitar lessons and stumbled across a garage sale next door.  I spent $25 and got a funky vase, a salmon poacher, asparagus plates and this cute appetizer dish.  I bet I will not use the poacher or asparagus plates ever, though you never know.  I can not wait to show up at a friend's house for a party with my kitschy mouse friends.

 

Jeff Kapfer Art Opening- Northwest Coffee, Clayton

Jeff Kapfer had an art opening at Northwest Coffee last night.  His paintings will be on display for a few weeks.  I especially liked the cardinal, though it sold.....this is St. Louis! It is a little Charley Harper-ish.

Saazs Contemporary Lighting

This is an interesting development in lighting. A company called Saazs is making these glass panels that emit light from little donut-shaped light emitters.  You have to look at the website to find out more about the technology. It says that it has a 20 year life and something tells me that you do not have to plug it in???
