Last night I took a ride in the first pneumatic elevator installed in St. Louis. The new house is located in Eureka and has a perfect view of the Meramec Valley. This elevator goes three levels. Yours for about $40,000. They are also available in white and a soft gray. This one is 37" and fits two people. There is also one that is 52" and can accommodate a wheelchair.
I just got back from a long weekend in lovely Cape Cod. At the end of town is a modernism masterpiece designed by Walter Gropius. The property commands perfect views of the bay and ocean. It has not been in use for years and the large estate is overgrown. The property is on the market now and preservationist fear that the house could get torn down. Save it for $12 million!

When some think of a lake for vacationing, they often think of Lake of the Ozarks. Those who have been to some of the nicer lakes know what Missourians are missing. They don't have seafaring speedboats zooming around with bikini-clad bimbos in them, they have sailboats and reserved speedboats. The lucky, sophisticated few have an antique boat like a Chris Craft. When we were at Lake Keuka in the Finger Lake area of New York state, we stumbled across an Antique Wooden Boat Show. I fell in love with the mahogany, streamlined Greavette that is the last pic. I looked at an on-line auction site for this boat and one was listed for $175,000.
While in Toronto we visited the famous Casa Loma. This castle was built in 1911 by Sir Henry Pellatt. He lost the home in the '30s when he experienced some financial setbacks and the city of Toronto increased his real estate taxes. I loved Sir Henry's bathroom. The shower has streams of water that come from all sides. Something that you can now get in fancy showers.
We stayed at the Le Germain Hotel (http://www.germaintoronto.com/) while in Toronto. I loved that the glasses in each room had the room number on them. The shower had a glass wall on one side that looked into the room. Of course you could leave the blinds open or close them for more modesty.
Last week a stop on our trip was to Toronto Canada. Check out their innovative and clean subway stop for the museum district. Some of the pics are from on top of the famous CN Tower. I also think the advertising along the side of the highways is an interesting idea.
The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is very "honky tonk", though fun. There are still several of the old 50's motels around. I hope they do not get torn down...they are such great examples of North Americana that is getting replaced with Springhill Suites and other chain hotels.
On our trip we stumbled across Asbury Park, an old New Jersey shore town that has seen better days. It is slowly being renovated. I loved the old casino in elegant disrepair.
Our summer vacation continues on the East Coast. There is such charm to the shore communities. Here are some more pics of houses in Ocean Park, NJ.
Located in Ocean Grove, New Jersey on the shore is a unique "camp" right in the middle of town. A Christian religious order has a large church on the town square and the members set up semi-permanent tents around the church in the summer for "camp". Supposedly the tent locations have been pasted down from generation to generation.
I am off to the East Coast for a little vacation with my sons. If I have some breaks in the activity, I will share some interesting pics with you.
Over the weekend we were in Bucks County near Philadelphia. Former St. Louisans, Lewis and Greg, were host to us at their lovely home. There were wild raspberry all over....yum yum.

I have always loved Spanish Revival homes. Clayton, Ladue and U City have the most examples. This lovely U City home located at the corner of Jackson and Teasdale is on the market for $749,000.
There is something said about timeless bathrooms that never really look dated. Take this bathroom in a lovely home on Ellenwood in Clayton. The white subway tiles and the floor tiles look as good today as they did back in the 20's. We all talk about being "green". What is more green than using something for decades. So before you redo a bathroom and use one of those popular bowl sinks, think to yourself....how soon will I get tired of this.
Happy July! The oak leaf hydrangeas are turning from white to a lovely pinky red. Yes, I have the weedy Queen Ann's Lace in my garden. I brought it in from the farm and love it. The Japanese Beatles descended on my garden and love to eat flowers. I ran out to The Bug Store and got a beetle trap.....I just don't like spraying insecticides in the garden. The best news is that my lavender was covered with honey bees this morning! Nothing is better than honey made from bees that play in lavender. I told them to take me to their hive.
